The Reluctant Twilighter

I can't believe I have a Twilight blog…

Those Twihards Are… Amazing? November 15, 2009

So is everyone on New Moon overload yet?  I know I am.  I’m took a little break from all of the videos, pictures, interviews, etc today.  Instead I’m working on getting through reading Twilight and New Moon before Thursday.  That’s right,  THERE’S ONLY FIVE MORE DAYS!!!  SQUEEEEEEEE!!!!!

There was some struggle over whether or not I really wanted to read New Moon before I saw the movie, but in the end I decided it was for the best.  Here’s my thought.  The downside, of course, is that with the book fresh in my mind I will no doubt recognize the inconsistencies in the movie and be more susceptible to disappointment.  However,  last year after watching the movie, and then trying to read the book, I was horrified to realize that my own personal Bella and Edward (along with every other character and location) from my head had been replaced with those from the movie.  I don’t like that.  Especially Jasper.  I think I may have actually cried a little bit when I realized I had lost “my” Jasper.  I got him back eventually, after a LOT of concentration and mind control.  So I’m hoping to have one last time with my New Moon before everything gets replaced.  And that’s why I’m reading New Moon.

Yes, please!

But that’s not really what I wanted to talk about tonight.  As I am writing this, there is currently a large group of Twihards camped out in LA for the New Moon premiere.  Let’s just make sure we’re all on the same page here.  Fans started lining up yesterday morning.  The premiere is on Monday.  That is E-A-R-L-Y.   These people are lined up block after block after block, just check out this video from www.hisgoldeneyes.com.

My first instinct when I heard about all this was to shout out “NERD ALERT!!”  It’s an old standby of mine, I use it on everyone, including myself.  You have to admit, waiting in line for days for a movie premiere (especially a movie about vampires and werewolves) is a pretty nerdy thing to do.  One can only imagine the nerdfest that is happening right now.  I’m thinking… intense Edward vs. Jacob debates, soundtrack sing-alongs, and possibly some inappropriate uses of life-size Edward Cullen cardboard cutouts.  At least that’s what I’d do if I were there.

merch_001

Go easy on him girls!

All that being said though, I will say I’m pretty impressed.  I don’t know the logistics of camping out on the LA streets for four days, but I’m guessing it’s rough.  The first few hours might be fun, and the payoff in the end might be worth it, but I’m sure it gets old real fast.  Hopefully everyone has read UC’s tips, but even LA gets cold at night, and sleeping in camping chairs can’t be comfortable.  The great thing is, the cast is getting wind of it and some of them are actually going out to visit the fans.  So far Alex Meraz (Paul) and Boo Boo Stewart (Seth) have already been out.  So nice, right?

In conclusion, my hat is off to all you ladies (and unicorns).  I hope come Monday, your persistence and dedication pays off, resulting in lots of hugs and kisses from Rob (or Taylor, if he’s your guy.)  You have my respect… but I’m only admitting that here, in the real world I will make fun of you lots and lots.  Sorry!  And for the rest of you, I wish you a great week of counting down to the best night of our lives.  Peace out!

True Love Waits October 19, 2009

Tonight is a momentous night.  Right about this time, exactly one month from today, we’ll all be waiting around various theaters across the world, waiting for the biggest moment of our lives.  And to mark this night, I have decided to cut myself off from any more New Moon footage from now on.  If I haven’t seen it already, I’m not watchin’ it.  Seriously.  This is it.

This includes the footage to be shown on the Scream Awards (airing October 27th) featuring the wolf pack.  Footage that apparently contains improved, “more realistic” wolves.  The same footage that was featured on Entertainment Tonight this evening.  The same footage that you can download on iTunes for free RIGHT NOW.  I would love nothing more than to pull up iTunes and watch these fancypants CGI wolves at this very moment.  I downloaded the clip already, it’s ready to go.  I was about to watch it, and then I realized something.  Watching these scenes will be so much more awesome if I’m seeing them for the first time in the theater.  On the BIG screen.  I’m sure these wolves would be pretty sweet on any screen no matter what size… but I want to be dazzled.

The_NEW_MOON_werewolf__Jacob__by_SPFX_JuNkY

My anticipation for midnight November 19th IS. GROWING. BY. THE. MINUTE.  The temptation is so high to just go and find every little clip and picture I can.  But I must be strong!  I know the payoff will be high.  I already feel like I’ve seen so much at this point.  Summit has been so kind to show us Bella’s birthday (inlcuding Jasper’s new, yet still ridiculous wig), motorcycles, new creepy Laurent, cliff-diving, shirtless Jacob, hell, they’ve even shown us shirtless Edward!!!  (The most highly-anticipated in the movie for sure.  Well, by me at least.)  I just want to save something for the big day.  For my big day.  I’m doing the right thing.  Right guys?  RIGHT?!?!

Now, I don’t want anyone reading this to think that they have to follow me in this.  I will not judge you.  This is a personal choice that I’m making for me, you all do as you see fit.  Chacun a son gout. (“To each his own” in French.  I know, fancy, right?)  Go ahead, right now, and check out those wolves.  Here’s the link. Let me know what you think.  If I can’t watch it myself, I can at least hear all about it!  Apparently Bella kicks some Quileute ass.

NMWP

And so,  believing that true love waits, I make a commitment to God, myself, my family, my friends, my reader(s), Stephenie Meyer, Chris Weitz, Kristen Stewart, Moon and UC, Johnny Flynn (because he cares), and Edward Cullen (duh, because he’s the biggest supporter of True Love Waits ever) to a month of purity including New Moon abstinence from this day until the day I enter into the Cinebarre on November 19th.

On a completely different note, I reached 500 hits today!  I know that’s not really a lot compared to a lot of blogs out there, but it’s strange for me.  As someone who previously kept her Twilight thoughts to herself, it’s a big deal.  Of course I do realize that if I hadn’t written about Kristen that one time, so long ago, I wouldn’t be anywhere near 500, but whatever.  I’ll take what I can get.  The searches for her are at least getting nicer. Mostly just “Kristen Stewart,” instead of “Kristen Stewart is not nice.”  Maybe the world of Twilighters is starting to take the hint.  So we’re all in agreement?  We’re cool with Kristen?  Okay then.  I think this calls for a big, giant, Kstew lovefest.  I can’t think of a better way to celebrate 500 views, can you?

Come back soon for Kstew Lovefest!!

This Just In: Twitter Edition October 15, 2009

Ha HA!  I told you I would be back soon!  While you’re reading today, please enjoy these recently-released New Moon pics!

So I’ve been paying more attention to Twitter lately.  I finally gave in and started following every single Twilight actor.  Everyone. Even little Boo Boo Stewart.  (I know, right?  Boo Boo?!?!?)  He’s the kid playing Seth Clearwater, and he’s super cute.  And apparently he’s all the rage amongst preteen girls, because he keeps tweeting about doing photoshoots for Bop and Tiger Beat.

NMUHQ2

You can learn a lot from Twitter.  For example, David Slade, director of Eclipse, is an avid user.  Most of the time he posts random pictures of sticks and leaves and grass.  Occasionally he’ll say something about the movie he’s making too.  Like this: “and so to bed dear readers, 6am call tomorrow, back into the fray after this brief weekend sabbatical. Snow and heartbreak begins in the am.”  Is he talking about the TENT SCENE!?!?!  Oh gosh. Oh gosh. Oh gosh!

NMNS-1

The biggest news from Twitter this week?  Simon Pegg is Team Jacob!  If you don’t know Simon Pegg is… well, then, I hate you.  No, no, not really.  Simon Pegg is a British actor/writer, responsible for movies like Shaun of the Dead (my all-time favorite movie of ALL TIME) and Hot Fuzz.  And he was in Star Trek.  I love him.  But he’s not someone I would expect to be reading these books.

NMUHQ3

Apparently I don’t know anything though, because he Twilight-tweeted nonstop for 24 hours.  Here’s what he had to say:

Note: This picture is NOT from New Moon.

Note: This picture is NOT from New Moon.

“Was bitten by a weregoat in Greece. No idea when I’ll change or what powers I will have. Intrigued!!”

“Wait, I think I changed last night. My sofa’s gone.”

“Read the Twilight books on hols. Really enjoyed them in a sort of ‘creepy old man reading delusional, horny, daughter’s diary’ way.”

“For a slightly more adult skewed werewolf novel, read Toby Barlow’s, Sharp Teeth. Utterly brilliant. http://tiny.cc/3s30R

“I’m definitely team Jacob. I much rather have good abs and burst sneakers than liquid topaz eyes and a fear of hand jobs.”

“Oh come on, the Cullens are so up themselves. Pretentious much? You’re vamps for frick’s sake, drink human blood and stop crying! (help).”

“I just woke up naked, in a petting zoo in Buckinghamshire. Where the hell have I been since 3pm? Hey I’m verified! I’m so disoriented!”

“Yeah I definitely transformed into a goat. . I did a pooh and loads of partly digested literature came out. I think New Moon was in there.”

“I’m not being mean about New Moon. I simply said I may have eaten whilst in the form of a goat. I don’t hate. It ain’t my style.”

“Right, I’m going straight to bed, think I’m beyond a bath. Go Jacob!!”

Go Jacob?!?!?  Whaaaa???  Mr. Pegg, you disappoint me.  But I guess I should’ve known.  He’s a boy.  Most boys are Team Jacob, right?  Because they’re all jealous of Edward?  They don’t understand his emo sensitive ways?  That’s it.

NMNS4

In other Twilight news, the opening scene of Eclipse is going to be focused on Riley, Rob is still pretty much nowhere to be found, and Ashley Greene is going to be a bird for Halloween.  BIG TIME STUFF!  Thanks for stopping by!  I heart you all.

P.S. For all you Johnny Flynn fans out there (which is everyone in the world, right?), he’s got two new songs up on his myspace page. It’s fun!

Happy Birthday To Me September 5, 2009

I celebrated my twenty-eighth birthday on Thursday.  I received many well-wishes, cards, sweet treats and presents…including a 3D poster of our dear Edward and Bella.  From a 33-year-old man.  He’s read Twilight, claimed he hated it, likes to make fun of me for my Twilight obsession.  If only he knew I have this little bloggy-blog!  Anyways, what’s funny about this present is that I would never, EVER go into Fred Meyer like he did and purchase this Twilight poster.  I might walk down the aisle where this poster is located, maybe glance quickly at it, definitely not stop or go anywhere near it, and most certainly not pick it up!  No way in hell would I actually buy it.  And here he is, actually taking it to the cash register and purchasing it with real money.  Apparently the male cashier he bought it from even tried to engage him in a Twilight conversation, but he was not having that.  Perhaps as a payback, the cashier didn’t give him a bag (neither paper nor plastic, that’s how we roll in Seattle) to carry it out in!  He had to walk out to his car proudly displaying his Twilight purchase.  All adding up to an incredibly embarrassing event.  That’s true friendship right there.  My poster is now proudly hanging in my house, until, of course, a visitor comes around…at which point I will take it down and hide it in my closet.

On another birthday note, another present I received was a brand new laptop that I just happen to be using at this very moment!  What does this mean to me, you ask?  Well, it means that you’re all in luck because now I have the capability to post much more often.  I know I make a lot of empty promises on this blog, but hopefully that all will change now that I have 24-hour access to the world wide web.  So hold onto your butts, and get ready to have the time of your life.  See you soon!

True Blood=Southern Fun September 2, 2009

My new favorite!

My new favorite!

I was talking to a friend of mine last week about how I was interested in watching the tv series Deadwood.  I had heard it was good and wanted to try it out.  He looked at me and said, “That’s a western, right?  So the vampires in that show are like, cowboy vampires?”  No, dear friend, contrary to popular belief, I don’t only like things that involve vampires.   However, as I mentioned in the last post, I have jumped on the bandwagon yet again, this time with the HBO series True Blood.  If you are not familiar with the show, it’s about vampires.  First, let’s be clear, it is NOT like Twilight.  Second…It. Is. Awesome.

Lot's of cheesy jokes on this show...

Lot's of cheesy jokes on this show...

The story of True Blood centers around Miss Sookie Stackhouse, a young woman who lives in a small Louisiana town with her grandmother and is a waitress at the local bar.  Oh…and she can read minds.  But what’s this?  She meets someone (someone she’s very attracted to) whose mind is closed to her!  Sound kind of familiar?  This special someone is Bill Compton (a.k.a. Vampire Bill) who is a vampire looking to “mainstream” into regular human society.  You see, the major difference between Twilight and True Blood is that in True Blood, the human world is actually aware of the fact that vampires exist.  After creation of a synthetic blood drink that vampires are able to live off of instead of humans, the vampires believed they would be able to “come out of the coffin” and all would be well in the world.  Of course this isn’t the case, religious groups are in an uproar, prejudice runs rampant, and quite a few vampires just aren’t satisfied with a blood substitute, instead preferring the real thing…humans.

There are many other differences, of course.  These vampires don’t really have special powers other than heightened senses, super-strength, and speed.  They cannot go out in the sunlight (no sparkle-sparkle), they sleep during the day,  and they actually have fangs.  Sigh.  I have a problem with the fangs.  They look pretty cool when they pop out, if a vampire gets excited or hungry, but once a vampire tries to talk with those fangs in their mouth, it sounds kind of stupid.  Like a kid who’s got their retainer in for the night.  Not cool.

Another  interesting difference is Sookie’s mind reading.  For her, this ability has caused nothing but pain and isolation her entire life.  She is unable to get past a first date with anyone, since being able to hear young men’s thoughts are quite appalling to Miss Sookie.  She spends a lot of effort trying to block out everyone’s thoughts, so when she meets Vampire Bill, she is not so much curious (like Edward was with Bella), but more relieved.  She is finally able to relax around someone and enjoy herself.

Bill says RELAX

Bill says RELAX

There are some similarities though.  Like Twilight, a world with vampires means you have to be open to the possibility that other mythical creatures could exist too.  (I won’t go into that, I don’t want to ruin it for anyone.)  Sookie and Bill, like Bella and Edward have some obstacles to overcome being a vampire/human couple.  (“We can never eat breakfast together, oh no!”  Um, yes, you can Sookie, just wake up really early.  Duh.)  And I see a lot of similarities in Bella and Sookie, besides that they seem to be very attracted/attractive to vampires.  They are both very brave, stubborn, young women who stick up for themselves and I like that.

So despite my original concerns with the story, mostly the cheesiness of it and the fact that I don’t find Vampire Bill attractive AT ALL (He’s old!), it has become my new favorite show.  It’s funny, scary (especially Season 2, eep!),  the ensemble cast is great, and there are lots of mysteries and surprises.  All adding up to a very fun show.  I recommend it to you all.  Check it out if you get the chance, and let me know what you think!

P.S. A word of warning, True Blood is intended for adults.  Violence, profanity, and graphic sex are around every corner so be careful!

Johnny Flynn! Johnny Flynn! Johnny Flynn!!! August 24, 2009

100_1170

So it turns out that having one of the best weekends ever doesn’t actually make me want to sit down in front of a computer and blog about it…who knew? But I’ve finally come down from my two-week long high and am ready to relay to you my thoughts and feelings regarding the day I saw Johnny Flynn live at the Edmonton Folk Festival.  For those of you that know my secret identity (which is all of you, because you’re the only ones who read this thing) you’ve probably seen the ridiculously long, drawn-out story (with a hundred billion pictures) that I put up on Facebook.  I don’t want to repeat myself, so I’ll try to share what was not previously covered so y’all don’t get bored.  Just for kicks I’ll probably pretend that some other people perhaps may stumble upon this little blog someday and may not know what the heck I’m talking about.  So first a little background.

Back in November, I discovered that the cast of Twilight had celebrity playlists available on iTunes.  I love celebrity playlists on iTunes, and my Twilight obsession had only been forming for a couple of months at that time, so needless to say I was super excited, particularly for the one by a Mr. Robert Pattinson.  Rob had included a song by Johnny Flynn and his little note said that he had grown up with Johnny and that he recently saw him live and that he was amazing.  He also said, “Get this album its great.”  So what did I do?  I got the album, of course!  Didn’t really listen to it until a few days later…one night I couldn’t sleep so I remembered that lovely little song (“Brown Trout Blues,” to be exact) that I thought might relax me.  I dialed up the album on my iPod and was BLOWN AWAY.  I don’t think I ended up falling asleep for another couple of hours because I was so energized by this album.  This amazing album that sounded like nothing else ever that made me feel like my life would never be the same.  (I know, I’m being overdramatic.)

alarum

Then tragedy struck.  The next day I immediately jumped on the interweb to learn more about my new music love, hoping that maybe he would be coming soon to a town near me, only to discover that he had already played a show in Seattle, exactly one month before!!  NOOOOO!!!!!!  I was devestated.  Heartbroken.  A thousand frowny-face emoticons cannot express how bummed I was.  (It still makes me sad, even now.)  So January rolled around and I made a resolution to see Johnny Flynn live, somehow in the year 2009.  If I was going to have to go all the way to London, than so be it.  Turned out my financial means were not coinciding with this noble aspiration, and I ended up pretty pessimistic about the possibility, all the while listening to the album at least twice a day, every day, telling everyone I knew about how great he was, desperately trying to share the love of Johnny Flynn to as many people as possible.  Cut to springtime when I found out he was playing at a random folk festival in Edmonton, Canada in August.  A quick Google search revealed that Edmonton was not really all that far away from Seattle (at least not as far as London) and my plan was set…Edmonton or bust!!  Oh, and PS, it turns out that he recorded his album at a secluded studio located a mere mile away from the house I grew up in, the house my dad still owns.  Coincidence?  I think not.  That killed me too.  He was hanging out in my home town last year and I had no idea!  WTF was he doing in the Pacific Northwest when he’s from London!?!?  It’s still a mystery to me, so therefore I declare it as fate bringing us together.

100_1236

Oh man, this is already taking way too long.  Okay, so two weeks ago I got on a plane and flew to Edmonton.  I was so excited, so nervous, so scared that he was going to cancel at the last minute, still in disbelief that it was actually happening…basically I was a mess.  But Saturday arrived and after a series of unfortunate/fortunate events, I finally made it in to see Johnny Flynn.  I really did cry the first time he opened his mouth and started singing.  It was just so overwhelming to hear it in person, something I had wanted for SO long.  Sigh.  It was amazing.  After the first little show I stalked him and his band for a little bit.  Okay, for a long time.  Which resulted in quite a few opportunities for me to say something to him.  Which resulted in me saying ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to him.  I was literally walking RIGHT NEXT TO HIM at one point, and I still couldn’t open up my mouth!  What a weirdo, yeah?  It was quite an enlightening experience though.  I always knew I was shy, but I did not know I was THIS shy.  I had originally thought that maybe it was just Johnny Flynn himself that was the problem.  But even when I saw just two of the boys from his band walking around, I still couldn’t muster up the courage. 5 cute British boys=too intimidating.  2 cute Britsh boys=still too intimidating.  It had me wondering if there would ever be a situation where I could say something.  For example, if JF ended up in the seat next to me on a plane perhaps, could I say something then?  Who knows…I’m an idiot.  That’s what I do know.

Just so you all know, Johnny is completely gorgeous in person.  He’s got rosy cheeks, disheveled, sandy-colored hair (that he constantly runs his fingers through, just like Rob!), and his teeth are almost as white as Taylor’s.  Pictures do not do him justice. Also, like Rob, he was quite charming and funny but in a shy kind of way.

100_1220

Anyways, the second, larger show was incredible.  The entire band was amazing…I have to recognize the entire band.  This whole time I’ve just been writing “Johnny Flynn” but what I mean to say is “Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit.”  It’s just that that takes to long to type.  But his band is great.  They’re all cute and super-talented and I love each and every one of them.  Especially Joe, the cello player.  I actually went away from the weekend with more of a crush on Joe than Johnny…go figure!  Anyways, the show was great, the weekend was great, and I was the happiest I’ve ever been.  Here are my favorite moments:

At one point I ended up walking about ten feet behind the entire band.  They were walking to drop off their instruments, and I was following them.  An older gentleman who was walking the opposite direction, just as he passed Johnny and his band, said very loudly, “Looking forward to this afternoon!!”  All five boys whipped their heads around SO FAST, one can only assume that they thought he was talking about their show.  But sadly, he was actually talking to his friend who had been seperated from him by the dear boys of the Sussex Wit.  SO CUTE.  I got the impression that they were pretty excited just to be involved with this festival, they all seemed pretty humble, like they were lucky to be there.  This should have only encouraged me to speak up and say something myself (“I’m looking forward to this afternoon too!!!”) but it didn’t.
During the mainstage show, I grabbed a spot on the ground inbetween some tarps.  A couple of older ladies on the tarp next to me were QUITE impressed with Mr. Flynn.  “So young!”  “What a hearthrob!” And my favorite, “He plays that guitar like a poet, not like a musician!”  How sweet.  After the show I just had to thank those tarp ladies for sharing their space with me and inform them that I had come all the way from Seattle just for this band.  They seemed fascinated by that.
During the first little show Johnny explained that the bass player didn’t have his guitar because he was held up at customs and the guitar was nowhere to be found.  He said that as their bandmate was being interrogated,  they “didn’t know what to do, and he seemed to be enjoying it…so we just left him.”  Poor guy.

100_1211So that was my wonderful weekend.  When I got back into town I caught Bobby Long’s (another friend of Rob’s) show in Seattle.  It was a completely different experience, very mellow, very small venue, but I had a good time.  Bobby was also very charming (also ran his fingers through his hair a lot, do you think they all attended a class together on “how to impress the ladies by looking angsty” in grade school or something?) and funny and cute and talented.  He was taking requests and dedicating songs to various fans in the audience and was definitely making the crowd happy.  I was hoping for some freaker Twilight fans, decked out with their Edward Cullen totebags, but no such luck.  But a good night had by all for sure.  Curiously, he reported on his myspace page a few days later that he had to cancel his Vancouver show because of problems getting into Canada.  Which begs the question, what does Canada have against young, male,  British musicians??  Why won’t they let any of them into their country?  Hey!  America Jr!  WTF???  Trust me, these boys are not going to cause as much havoc as Rob does!  I know he’s turned your great city of Vancouver into a sespool of crazed, over-caffeinated, teenage girls, (not to mention all the paparazzi a-holes) but I don’t think these boys will be as much trouble.  Let them in!!

Thanks for taking the time to read my crazy ramblings about my most favorite band ever.  I hope that you all check out Johnny Flynn (if you haven’t already) because he really is amazing.  There has been mentioned of a new album coming up within the next six months, so let’s hope for another US tour!

PS  My hotel in Edmonton was located on Jasper Avenue.  Awesome.100_1270

PPS…Truth: Part of the reason why it took me so long to post anything new since JF is that I’ve been holed up in my house watching the first season of True Blood.  Did you notice that I wrote “y’all” earlier?  That’s the True Blood talking.  I’m starting to think in a Louisiana accent.  I’ll be giving you an in-depth look at True Blood and how it compares to Twilight very soon, so don’t touch that dial!

HP vs Twilight: The Final Battle July 27, 2009

EW.

EW.

When I was camping this weekend it started raining.  (Because I live in Washington and apparently it rains here.)  I spent the evening holed up in my tent with my dog, ignoring the laughter of my friends and family, instead choosing to pout about the weather.  While I was pouting, I also started reading Twilight for the first time in probably at least six months.  I realized that I had forgotten how much I loved Edward Cullen.  He really is great, isn’t he?  Anyways, last night when I got home and went to bed, I was hoping for an Edward dream, so I was trying to think about him as much as possible as I was drifting off to sleep.  When I woke up, however, I realized that I did NOT, in fact have an Edward dream.  Who was in my dream instead, you ask?  One of the freaking Jonas brothers! And not even one of the cute ones.  It was the ugly one.  You know which one, don’t make me say his name.  Let’s move on.

Today I’m wrapping up this Harry Potter vs. Twilight debate.  I believe at this point our score is Harry Potter 3, Twilight 1.  This last round is just an overall, which is better, which do I like better, etc. sort of category.  When I used to play soccer as a teenager, we would always end our practices with a scrimmage game.  When there was just a few minutes left of practice, my coach would declare, “Next goal wins!” no matter what the score was.  I know she was trying to motivate us to push ourselves just a little harder, but usually it just infuriated me.  I was always frustrated with the unfairness of it, even if my team won.  But apparently I’ve grown into a hypocrite, because that’s what I’m doing today.  Winner takes all in this one.  Next goal wins!

This is the hardest one to do (that’s what she said) because, like I said, I love them both dearly.  I’ve loved HP for a long, long, time and it hasn’t even been a year yet since I was first introduced to Twilight.  I have favorite characters in both series, favorite books in both series, favorite scenes that make me smile even right now as I think about them.  I think it’s pretty obvious which one I think is the more respectable of the two, (just look at the current score.)  The one that I’m proud to say I’m a fan of, the one that I don’t care who knows that I love with all my heart.  The other one…well, I will just say that sometimes I get a little embarrassed about loving it so much.

But here’s the thing: Not once, not ever, have I EVER had the tiniest inkling to start a blog about Harry Potter.  I don’t have a single HP website or blog that I follow.  I could probably only name one for sure that I know of.  And yet I have 7 different Twilight sites saved in my favorites at this very moment on my computer.  And 3 saved onto my computer at work!  Not to mention this little blog of my own that I still can’t believe I’m doing.

I’ve never seen any of the Harry Potter movies in the theater more than a few times, not even my favorite ones.  I think the most was maybe 4?  My theater viewings for Twilight reached into the teens this winter.  That’s right.  Wait, have I not mentioned this yet?  If I remember correctly, (which I do, I’m just stalling now because it’s so embarrassing) the final count was…13 times.  And I didn’t even think the movie was that good!  Sigh.  Not one of my proudest accomplishments, but it happened, and I’m learning to live with it.  Just don’t tell anyone.  Please.  Seriously.

There are also some…emotions that I experience while reading Twilight that I never felt in any of the HP books.  I definitely went through a lot with Harry Potter and all his little friends, for sure.  I’ve felt joy, pain, hatred, sorrow, triumph.  (I cried through the entire seventh book alone!)    But there was that other feeling, the one of being in love, that you just can’t get out of HP.  Rowling just doesn’t dive deep enough into those relationships to get to experience it.  Which is fine, I’m not criticizing.  It’s just something that Twilight has that HP doesn’t.  The giddiness that comes from reading the first book in the Twilight series, when Edward and Bella first find each other, you just can’t beat it.

So in the end, I think have to declare Twilight the final winner.  I have some friends (friends who know absolutely nothing of my site, I might add) that would kill me if they heard me say this.  But I think maybe it’s true, at least for now.  And even if it’s not, this is a Twilight blog, after all.  What kind of blogger would I be if I didn’t support the very series that I created this blog for?  A pretty lame one, I think.  TWILIGHT WINS!!!

THE WINNER!!!

THE WINNER!!!

Round 3: Vampires vs. Wizards! July 20, 2009

Apologies all around for the lack of posts during these exciting times, I was too hopped-up on Pottermania to go anywhere near a computer.  (I haven’t even had a chance to look at all the pictures of Rob in New York for this week!  He’s got a hot-pink sleeping bag!  His face is bleeding!  He’s wearing plaid again!  Weeee!!!)  On to Round 3: VAMPIRES vs. WIZARDS!!!

Last week we discussed a very specific vampire (Edward Cullen) and a very

I daresay he may be sexier than Edward...well, sexier than Emmett for sure.

I daresay he may be sexier than Edward...well, sexier than Emmett at the very least.

specific wizard (Harry Potter.)  Today I’d like to talk about vampires and wizards in a more general sense.  Specifically, which would I rather be?  This is a tough one for sure.  Let’s look at some facts, shall we?  Vampires have definitely got something going for them.  Sex appeal is a major plus.  Vampires are sexy.  Wizards are not.  (Unless you’re Draco Malfoy.)  Vampires are super-fast, super-strong, super-beautiful, etc.  The list goes on and on.  They don’t get hurt, they have amazing memories, AND becoming a vampire opens up the possibility of having some sort of super power!  How exciting!  (Of course, there is always the potential that you don’t end up with any special gifts, or you get a lame one like Esme…the ability to love passionately?  LAME.  They all do that, duh.  But you could end up with something cool, which is very enticing, I must admit.)  With these gifts you can live a life of luxury, traveling the world looking beautiful in designer clothes, driving fast cars and feasting on whichever mammal you choose, then having all-night sex with your eternal life partner.  Sounds good, right?  Not so fast…

There are some downsides to being a vampire, for sure.  Becoming a vampire is a BIG commitment.  Once you go through those 3 days of vicious pain, that’s it.  No turning back.  Wizards, on the other hand, always have the option of giving up their wizardly ways and taking up the muggle way of life.  They can do that whenever they want.  For a day, a week, or a lifetime. (Similar to the motto of my hometown.  “Welcome to ______, for a day or a lifetime.”  Maybe that should be the wizards motto too…Welcome to our wizarding world, for a day or a lifetime.)  There’s also the issue of living forever.  Some might see this as a pro for the vampires, but I’m not so sure.  Apart from getting to wear clothes from every era, I just don’t see the appeal.  You also don’t get to eat regular food anymore.  I am not okay with that.  Even worse for the vampires, wizards get to eat amazing food.  Have you ever been to a Hogwarts feast?  Well…me neither, but what I picture in my head is totally worth choosing wizards over vampires.  Roast turkeys, boiled potatoes, pumpkin juice, puddings, pies, ohhhh man, sign me up right now.  Put me on that Hogwarts Express, my owl is in his cage and my trunk is packed!  (Nerd alert!)

Even without the food though, I think I’d still choose to be a wizard.  It just simply sounds like more fun, yeah?  Being a vampire just sounds like too much of a hassle.  You don’t have the freedom to do whatever you want, you can’t even enjoy a sunny day without worrying about someone seeing your sparkly skin.  Plus you’ve got the Volturi breathing down your icy neck 24-7, that’s a hassle.  Bottom line, being a vampire may sound like fun at first, but wizards are where it’s at.  WIZARDS WIN!!!

What about you?  Which would you rather be???

More Draco, just for kicks! He's even sexy when he's crying!

One more shot of Draco, just because I can. He's even sexy when he's crying!

Round 2: Harry vs. Edward!! July 14, 2009

harryandedward

Now this one I’m excited for!  Oh, where do I even start??  Okay here we have two VERY different characters, both very admirable though, don’t you think?  Harry Potter and Edward Cullen.  One is a human boy with magic abilities, one is a 100+ year old vampire trapped in a teenager’s body who can read minds.  One sacrifices all he has to save the entire world, the other spends his days chasing after a very clumsy girl so she doesn’t end up in the hospital AGAIN.

When comparing Edward and Harry, my thoughts go straight to (in my opinion) the best question, who would win in a fight between these two?  This question was asked of Stephenie Meyer awhile back on a Muggle.net podcast, and I couldn’t agree more with her answer.  Harry would not have a chance. Before he could even reach into his pocket to pull out his wand Edward would have torn his head off.  No contest.  Not even JK Rowling could deny this.  Point for Edward!  Even if Harry tried sneak up on Edward while wearing his invisibility cloak (this is where we start to get super-nerdy kids, I hope you’re ready) Edward would be able to not only smell him, but also hear his thoughts a mile away.   (We all know how those Occlumency lessons turned out, Harry.)  The only way Harry would ever have a chance is if he somehow concocted some sort of potion that made him odorless, thoughtless, etc.  But that doesn’t really count, because I’m not talking about some sort of wizard-vampire guerrilla warfare here, I’m talking about hand-to-hand combat.  Although wizard-vampire guerrilla warfare does sound pretty cool…

I know, that was fairly pointless, Harry and Edward would never fight each other!  They’re on the same team!  The good team.  My team.  So what about their personalities?  Who is more likable?  Who would be a better friend?  Better boyfriend?  Well, once again, Edward wins.  Throughout most of the HP books, Harry is moody, whiny and stressed out.  Does he have a lot of outside components in his life causing him to act this way?  Yes.  Does that that mean he can snap at his friends who have been at his side since the beginning?  NO.  Edward can be a little moody too sometimes, but never as bad as Mr. Potter.  Edward has the maturity bonus too.  Harry is boy, Edward is a man.  A man who will never look a day over seventeen.  Someday Harry will grow old, most likely turning out looking very similar to Dumbledore…long beard, wrinkly skin, etc.   Edward’s going to stay gorgeous for all eternity.   Plus I’m pretty positive Edward’s a better kisser.  Even if he is ice-cold.  What’s cooler than being cool??  ICE-COLD!  EDWARD WINS!!!

Author’s note:  I searched through a LOT of pictures of Edward trying to find one of him smiling and failed miserably…

Come on, Edward, you just won! At least TRY to look happy!
